Edward Zammit Lewis
Dr. Edward Zammit Lewis is the Minister responsible for Justice, Equality, and Governance since the 15th of January, 2020.
He is synonymous with extensive constitutional and institutional reforms conducted after a Council of Europe [Venice Commission] Report last June, reforming, amongst others, the office of the President of Malta and the Judiciary.
He was elected for the first time in the 2013 General Election and was chosen to form part of the Cabinet. He was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary for Competitiveness and Economic Growth. A year after, he was appointed as Minister for Tourism, a post he occupied up till the June 2017 elections.
Under his stewardship as Minister, the Maltese film industry had its best year ever in 2015. Zammit Lewis even strengthened the legal framework regulating the aviation industry, by leading important amendments to the 2010 Aircraft Registration Act in a bid to make Malta a center for important and lucrative activities such as aircraft leasing and aircraft finance.
Hon. Zammit Lewis was again elected to the Maltese Parliament in 2017. He Chaired two important Parliamentary Standing Committees; the Committee for Foreign & European Affairs and the new Committee for The Scrutiny of Certain Public Appointments. Zammit Lewis also actively served as a member of four other Parliamentary Standing Committees.
Edward Zammit Lewis is a lawyer by profession, who practiced for several years in the civil, commercial, administrative, and constitutional law areas. He also holds a BA European Studies and International relations.
He is married to Elena Farrugia, a Notary Public, and has a daughter Lucia.
